Young participants of the weekly peer led Manga Club at Moray Art Centre have created a ‘Manga-zine’ to support to young people who are or have experience bullying of any sort – including physical and social bullying as well as cyber bullying. The stylised booklet has just been completed in time for the UK’s Anti-Bullying week.
‘Manga’ refers to a drawing style that originated in Japan, and is characterised by distinctive characters and styles that visually set it apart from other forms of drawing and animation. Manga Club is a peer-led programme of activity that was first set up in 2007. The weekly sessions encourage young participants interested in Manga to learn new drawing skills from each other.
Funding was sought and gained by Nicolle Cordell from Arts Action Fund as part of her volunteer placement at Moray Art Centre and the Manga Club got together to to research, design and produce the Manga style magazine. The group designed the stories and developed the characters themselves, informed by a real passion for Manga.
The Manga-zine will be published this week and then distributed around secondary schools and youth groups in Moray.
