Monday 19th June 2023 - 23rd June 2023

5 Day course

9:30am - 4:30pm each day

All materials and a daily light lunch provided

This course is designed to encourage students to get creative with still life painting. Starting with lectures discussing the genre’s history and showing unusual and inspiring work from both historical and contemporary artists, we will look at how composition, subject matter and the use of metaphor can elevate simple depictions of objects to great works of art.

There will be an emphasis on developing and refining ideas to make memorable and meaningful paintings. We will explore painting from life, using reference images and working straight from the imagination to give each artist a sense of the broad scope of what is possible within the genre.

We will cover drawing and painting techniques, object selection, composition and lighting. Charcoal, acrylics, oils and primed cartridge paper will be provided.

Students are welcome to bring any other surfaces or mediums to work with if they prefer. There will be a selection of interesting objects provided by the tutor, but the students will also be encouraged to brainstorm and bring in their own unique objects and or found images to make the most exciting and personal paintings possible.
