Service Description

This is a new session for late summer - each season offers a different array of tones and available materials to make inks from. 10:30 - 4:30 All materials included Natural Ink for drawing, painting and printing. Discover the colours in your natural surroundings! The natural world around us offers so many beautiful colours and tones! In this workshop, we’ll learn how to create water-based inks from foraged material. We’ll have a look at different approaches you can take depending on the type of material, and have a go at making inks from berry and plant material. We’ll try a variety of mark-making techniques to test out the possibilities of these colours, such as drawing, painting, line-work, sponging, leaf-printing, stamping and pattern-making with other natural materials. We will discover how these inks change in different scenarios, and with different additives, on a variety of different papers, and build up a series of colour swatches which can be used for reference for future art projects. Natural ink making is an ongoing process of experimentation, discovery and wonder. You will notice that your living inks change over time, and can be quite wonderfully unpredictable! About Helen: I am a creative working primarily in the media of stop-motion, hand-drawn and experimental animation, though my work also involves drawing, printmaking and photography. I studied BA Hons Film production at the Arts University College Bournemouth, and then MA Animation Filmmaking at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn. Having spent several years living and working in the EU, it is nice to be reconnecting with the Highlands where I grew up, and using the Scottish landscape and nature to inform and inspire my work. I am a keen advocate of finding creative inspiration in the outdoors and I like to consider how my work relates to the natural environment, via material use or themes. I also work / volunteer with land-based environmental organisations, and find this is a beneficial way to directly link my creative work to the natural world. I recently completed an animation commission for Trees for Life, using natural inks made from native Highland plants. The resulting film will be shown at the Rewilding Centre in Dunreggan, opening in April 2023. PLEASE NOTE: All of our workshops require a minimum number of participants for them to run. Workshops may need to be canceled or postponed if numbers are not met.
